Feb. 15 Ostrov/The
Island (DVD): Jim Forest describes this film as “essentially
. . . a study of sanctity. . . . It’s filmed on the northern
edge of Russia on a few barren islands in the White Sea where a
small community of monks live a very austere life. One of them is
Fr. Anatoly, who decades earlier was rescued by the monks after
being washed up on the shore following the sinking of the coal barge
he had been working on, stoking the boiler. He brings with him an
almost unbearable burden, the memory of killing a defenseless man
in order to save his own life. Repentance is at the core of his
life. Ostrov has received prizes for best film, best actor, best
cinematography. It was well received at various international film
festivals: Venice, San Francisco, Seattle, London, Sundance, Montreal,
etc.”
